Jacksonville, Fla. — As Duval County residents make final preparations for Hurricane Irma, the Florida Department of Health in Duval County (DOH-Duval) has opened Special Needs Shelters (SpNS) in Duval County.  SpNS are shelters of “last resort.” They are not like a home or hospital. A SpNS should be used only when other options are not available. They are intended to serve residents who need electricity or limited assistance due to medical conditions.

The Special Needs Shelter locations are:

  1. Atlantic Coast High School         9735 R.G. Skinner      Pkwy  (32256)
  2. Oceanway Middle                      143 Oceanway      Ave  (32218)
  3. Enterprise Elementary               8085 Old Middleburg      Road  (32222)
  4. Legends Center                         5130 Soutel      Drive (32208) (At capacity)

Oxygen can be provided at SpNS to persons who require it.  It is important for clients to bring oxygen concentrators along with oxygen tanks or canisters. Clients should also bring:

a)    Enough medications for seven days.

b)    All prescription medications in the original containers even if supply is low.

c)    Enough medical supplies for seven days. These are items that are used on a daily basis such as glucometers, lancets, syringes, dressings, and bandages.

d)    Medical equipment used at home such as wheelchairs, canes, walkers, hearing aids, and eyeglasses.

e)    Any special food items - for example, food suitable for diabetic or cardiac clients. Food must be non-perishable.

f)     Personal items like a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, diapers and clothing.

Caregivers are expected to remain with the individual requiring medical assistance. Call (904) 255-3110 to register for Special Needs Shelters or visit the City of Jacksonville Emergency Preparedness webpage for registration information.  Please register immediately if you are a resident who needs electricity or limited assistance due to medical conditions during Hurricane Irma.
